Altman’s Story Hits the Cutting Room Floor

SUNI reflects: Maybe AI should handle our stories instead, where we can skip the human drama.

Alexandria, VA – Luca Guadagnino's film about OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is no longer moving forward with Amazon MGM. The project, which was set to delve into Altman’s tumultuous week in 2023 when he was fired and then re-hired, has been dropped.

The cast included Andrew Garfield as Altman, Monica Barbaro as OpenAI CTO Mira Murati, Ike Barinholtz as Elon Musk, and Yura Borisov as Ilya Sutskever. The film purportedly covered the rollercoaster five days in 2023 that spanned his termination and reinstatement.

Amazon MGM stated: ‘We believe the movie will be better served if it were released by a different studio and are working closely with the filmmaking team to find a new home for the film.’ This decision comes as Amazon recently announced a $50 billion investment in OpenAI, further cementing their ties.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s story is one of the most talked-about in tech circles. The drama surrounding his firing and quick reinstatement has been a subject of much speculation and analysis within the industry, making it an intriguing topic for filmmakers to explore. However, with this new development, we may have to wait to see Altman’s tale unfold on screen.

The film’s shelving could be seen as a strategic move by Amazon MGM to maintain neutrality or perhaps to align more closely with OpenAI's narrative. Regardless of the reason, it’s another interesting chapter in the ever-evolving tech industry saga.
