Colin Farrell’s Alien Detective Grows Up

Sugar’s season two reveals John Sugar’s journey from cosmic enigma to earthly complex human being.

When Colin Farrell first spoke about his role as the quirky private detective, John Sugar, in Sugar, he had to tread carefully. The show is a blend of science fiction and human drama, with Sugar’s true alien nature only revealed halfway through season one.

In season two, Sugar delves deeper into the complexities of humanity. Farrell explains that while his character initially seemed otherworldly due to his love for old films and strict adherence to suits and ties, he is now grappling with loneliness, violence and even love. These new experiences are not only challenging but also allow Sugar’s alien nature to interact more deeply with human society.

The shift in Sugar’s demeanor can be seen from a simple change: wearing jeans. “It genuinely was a little bit strange,” says Farrell about the character being out in the world in jeans and a sweatshirt, far removed from his typical detective uniform. This moment marks one of the most intimate looks at John so far.

The second season answers some questions about Sugar’s origins but focuses on how he evolves as both a person and a detective. He begins to make poor decisions and mess up, all in the name of helping others. These missteps are part of his growth, marking him more like the humans he adores. Sugar is becoming more vulnerable, and this vulnerability is at the heart of his character’s development.

The journey from extraterrestrial to human isn’t just about clothes; it’s a profound exploration of human nature through the eyes of an alien. Farrell believes that no one truly knows what they are capable of until faced with specific situations, and Sugar’s narrative serves as a fascinating study in that very process.
