Earlier today, T-Mobile began notifying customers that it will be phasing out many of its oldest plans and moving subscribers onto current rate plans. The move includes legacy plans dating back to the 3G era.
Affected customers started sharing screenshots on social media, with T-Mobile’s chief marketing officer Allan Samson confirming the news to The Verge. He stated that the transition is aimed at providing access to America's best wireless technology and enhanced features. Some customers will see no change in their monthly bills, while others may experience a modest adjustment.
T-Mobile has provided an FAQ on its website with more details, but specifics on which plans are being retired remain unclear. Legacy Sprint plans, T-Mobile One plans, and Magenta Max plans introduced as recently as 2021, have been cited by users. The move has sparked dismay and anger among customers, particularly those who recall a time when the company styled itself as a competitor to pricier carriers like AT&T and Verizon.
For those looking to leave T-Mobile for an alternative, options are limited. Many MVNOs operate on T-Mobile's network—like Mint Mobile—but still rely heavily on its infrastructure. The consolidation of major US carriers from four down to three after T-Mobile's acquisition of Sprint in 2020 also limits choices.
