A new breed of e-bike motor promises seamless shifting and infinite gear ratios. Imagine pedaling at your chosen cadence without a fragile derailleur or heavy multi-speed cassette. This innovation could change how we build e-bikes, making them more durable and easier to maintain.
Two companies, Avinox and Gobao, have unveiled these Motor Gearbox Units (MGUs), which integrate an electronic continuously variable transmission (eCVT) directly into the motor housing. The MG Concept from Avinox and the X-series from Gobao both offer infinite gear ratios, allowing cyclists to define their preferred gear ratios or opt for a smooth, stepless shifting experience.
The benefits extend beyond just riding convenience. With fewer moving parts, these e-bikes should be more durable and require less maintenance. They can handle heavy loads and difficult terrains with ease, making them ideal for both mountain biking and commuting.
While initially targeting high-end electric mountain bikes (eMTBs), the potential applications are vast. These MGUs could soon find their way into commuter e-bikes, cargo bikes, and family-friendly models. The innovation hints at a future where our bicycles become even more reliable companions on our daily adventures.
