President Trump's ambitious plan to revamp every .gov website through AI and a small team has faltered. The National Design Studio, created in August 2018, aims to overhaul 27,000 websites but has struggled due to the dismantling of key technology units.
Despite its lofty goals, NDS has only managed minor successes like modernizing the federal retirement system. Former workers claim credit for ongoing projects and criticize a reliance on AI that hasn't ensured compliance with accessibility standards.
The initiative's shortcomings highlight the challenges in unifying government websites under new design language. With agencies now wary of engaging, it seems Trump’s digital legacy may be more patched than polished.
