Far-right conspiracy peddler Alex Jones is still fighting to keep his Infowars media network, but The Onion isn't backing down. The satirical outlet's new weekly livestream parody of Infowars, simply titled 'Infowars', kicks off tonight with a grisly death scene where Alex Jones explodes from eating too much Whataburger.
The first episode reveals that after Jones' demise, the show tries to figure out if he's still alive or has been replaced by a body double. Tim Heidecker, known for his impression of Jones, remains creative director and will continue to lampoon internet culture and political commentators.
While The Onion legally can't take over Infowars' assets yet, it plans to use the parody as a form of digital satire targeting conspiracism. 'We need some satirical product that is natively internet satire,' explains Jeff Lawson, owner of The Onion's parent company. The show aims to ridicule the conspiracist brain rot infecting social media.
In addition to Heidecker, other familiar faces like Tim Robinson and Jim Haggerty return for the parody. The premiere episode features a delirious opening theme by Nick Lutsko, who keeps forcing his 'Infowars Elf' character back into the mix despite rejections from higher-ups.
'This is very much like an Avengers assemble sort of thing for everyone making fun of these assholes,' says Tim Collins. The Onion hopes to connect with its audience on more interactive platforms and use satire as a tool to highlight issues in society.
