Sudo make me a sandwich? The future has arrived! DoorDash, the delivery darling, has introduced a limited beta of dd-cli, their command-line interface for developers. Now, you can order food directly from an AI agent, searching stores and finding deals all via code. It's not just a gag—it's agentic commerce at its most meta.
The tool is open to U.S. and Canadian macOS developers on a waitlist, according to DoorDash co-founder Andy Fang. But why stop there? Developers can build their own tools for ordering food, groceries, or local lunch deals. DoorDash’s move shows how AI agents could soon become an integral part of our daily routines.
DoorDash isn't the only one experimenting with this tech: they also have their own chatbot, ‘Ask DoorDash,’ and expose their service to other AI platforms like ChatGPT and Claude. The launch has a bit of humor to it; after all, what’s more absurd than an AI making a sandwich? This XKCD comic comes to mind, where a programmer’s task is so simple, even coding feels overkill.
The attached video in DoorDash's X post drives home the point. It reads Slack commands, recalls memories, and runs Python scripts just to order three salads. The interface even says 'Flibbertigibbeting,' making it hilariously complex for something as straightforward as lunch ordering. Who knew automation could be this… sandwich-y?
