Mercedes Ditches the Wheel for a Yoke

Is this the future of driving, or just another tech fad?

Steer-by-wire is coming to Mercedes-Benz's EQS sedan, marking its first step into the world of electronic steering. This means goodbye to traditional racks and pinions, hello to electronically controlled servos.

The company won’t be abandoning conventional steering just yet; both steer-by-wire and traditional options will come with the EQS. After over 621,000 miles of testing, Mercedes is confident in its system’s reliability, backed by redundant signal paths and high-precision sensors.

But the new steering yoke is set to spark debate among fans. With a design reminiscent of race cars or aircraft cockpits, it promises an unobstructed view of the instrument cluster. However, many will wonder about safety and ease of use during turns at speed.

The initial reactions are cautiously positive. The Drive praised its functionality, while InsideEVs commended the steer-by-wire system but remained neutral on the yoke. Only time will tell if this is a bold step forward or just another gimmick in automotive history.
