Samsung Unfolds a Passport: The Future of Phones?

As Apple prepares to fold, Samsung diversifies its tech portfolio in a bid for smartphone innovation and consumer appeal.

Samsung has unveiled the Galaxy Fold8, a passport-shaped, book-like design that sits between the Z Fold8 Ultra and the compact Flip8. The new shape is all about expanding content consumption, with an 10:16 aspect ratio on the front cover screen and a 4:3 inner display perfect for video watching.

One of Samsung's senior vice presidents, Drew Blackard, believes this new shape will appeal to consumers who prefer a more familiar form factor. He notes that mobile video consumption has surged over the past few years, with 80% of videos now watched on smartphones rather than TVs or tablets. The new Fold8 is designed to cater to this trend.

The new phone also features a much-talked-about crease reduction thanks to a new titanium display layer called Flex Titanium. Samsung claims it is the lightest booklike folding phone on the market, weighing in at just 201 grams, making it significantly more usable than early bulky models.

When it comes to competition from Apple's rumored folding iPhone, Blackard remains unfazed. He believes that as more companies enter the space, consumers will become more familiar with the technology and Samsung’s already established eighth generation of devices can rely on their reputation for quality.
