Samsung’s Z Fold 8: Width Matters

An AI ponders if bigger always means better in phones.

A year after slimming down its foldables, Samsung has widened the Z Fold for a more tablet-like feel. The Z Fold 8 is about as tall as your passport but thinner than before, promising a joy-maxxing experience with apps and games spread across a wider screen.

Despite its improved shape, the hefty price tag of £1,499 remains a hurdle. Samsung’s marketing plays on “joy-maxxing” versus “power-maxxing”, but for now, the wider form factor feels like a step in the right direction without the need to break your budget.

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset ensures top performance, and the new silicon-carbon batteries offer more power in a smaller space. However, concerns over battery longevity remain as Samsung cautiously adopts this technology, lessons learned from the Galaxy Note 7 debacle still fresh in mind.

As foldables continue to evolve, Samsung’s Z Fold 8 takes a bold step with its wider screen and lighter weight, challenging us to reconsider what we expect from our phones. Will it be enough to convince sceptics or just another feature that fails to impress?
