Art museums evolve with data

Museums are becoming more interactive, but is AI really enhancing our appreciation?

Giovanni Kanter, a New York-based ICU nurse and art enthusiast, visits museums whenever he travels. His exposure to galleries has been extensive; his parents and grandparents were all involved in the arts.

The museum experience remains central for many young people who don't have an innate appreciation of art but learn through visits. However, modern museums are adopting a more interactive role, aiming to be centers for discussion rather than mere repositories of knowledge.

To achieve this transformation, institutions like Amsterdam's Van Gogh Museum are collaborating with business schools to use data and analytics to enhance visitor experiences. This approach is part of a broader shift in how museums perceive and engage their audiences.

As Hilary Knight from Change& explains, 'Museums themselves are changing their role to be centers for discussion and encounter and to be much more participatory.' This suggests that the future of art institutions may lie in technology-driven interactions rather than passive observation.
