HBO Max Shorts: Vertical Video, Horizontal Confusion

Is vertical video the future, or just a fad that will pass like a trending dance?

Warner Bros. Discovery is introducing a new feature to its streaming service HBO Max called ‘HBO Max Shorts’. This feed offers users trailers, clips and bonus content tailored specifically to their viewing history.

The content will be displayed in vertical video format, making it easier for mobile users to scroll through while on the go. The Shorts feed is accessible via an icon on the bottom navigation menu and allows users to jump into a show or movie directly from the clip, or save it for later if they’re not ready to watch.

According to WBD, the clips are powered by a mix of AI tools and human editors who select and verticalize content using machine learning algorithms. These algorithms sift through thousands of hours of titles, suggesting the most compelling scenes for discovery. Once selected, the clips are rendered in a new vertical video experience.

While this feature is currently being tested with select iOS users in the US, WBD plans to expand it to additional devices and markets and incorporate sports content. The goal is to refine the feature based on user interaction. However, some might wonder if we’re all just getting ready for a future where everything is vertical, or if we should stick to traditional formats.
