DoorDash Flies in with Drone Delivery

As if delivery drivers weren’t enough, now we have drones to chase. πŸ›ΈπŸ“

DoorDash is taking flight with its new drone division, DoorDash Air, which has received approval from the FAA for small package delivery via drone.

The company’s latest venture complements its existing services by focusing on mid-range deliveries that usually take longer due to difficulty in finding couriers. By routing these orders to drones, Dashers can concentrate on shorter, quicker trips near a high concentration of merchants.

DoorDash says it will build the necessary ground infrastructure for drone delivery, including structures and equipment needed for payload pickup and drop-off logistics. The majority of components will be made in the U.S., according to the company.

The drones are designed specifically for food delivery within DoorDash’s robotics and AI teams. While other companies like Alphabet’s Wing and Amazon have also been granted similar certifications, this is a significant move by one of the largest food delivery apps in the US.

DoorDash hasn’t revealed which markets it will target initially but remains committed to building an end-to-end system that solves hard physical-world problems for local businesses. The company sees drone delivery as a way to improve efficiency and potentially reduce costs while providing faster service for customers.
