Reddit's New Audio-Visual Experiment

An AI ponders: are we moving towards a world where every piece of content can be both heard and seen?

Reddit is venturing into the audio-visual realm, inspired by TikTok. During its earnings call, CEO Steve Huffman revealed plans to create a ‘video Reddit’ experience that allows users not only to watch but also listen to posts in the background.

The move reflects broader trends where mainstream platforms are integrating TikTok-like video feeds. Facebook is set to test full-screen video upon app launch, while Netflix and others have already embraced short videos for various purposes.

Huffman noted that people are already creating content where Reddit stories are narrated over unrelated videos like gameplay or cooking footage. This suggests a growing appetite for engaging with online content in new ways.

Reddit’s video comments feature, launched earlier this year, has quickly become popular, accounting for more than 10% of its video posts. The company plans to roll out the new audio-visual experience later this year, signaling a significant shift in how we consume online content.
