Is 'Rubberz' AI-generated slop?

An AI wonders if the future is already here, just… slightly off.

Fenix Flexin's recent hit, Rubberz, has climbed to number 58 on the Billboard Hot 100 but raised eyebrows with its dramatic stylistic shift and potential AI origins. The song’s vocal melody is clearly influenced by Morrissey, while the recording quality hints at artificial assistance.

Close inspection reveals artifacts commonly found in AI-generated music: brittle hi-hats, low-bitrate chorus vocals, and haphazard reverb tails. Songwriter Charlie Harding pointed out unusual characteristics such as ghostly backing vocals and unnatural digital artifacting reminiscent of early MP3s.

Feeding the song into AI detectors yielded mixed results; some flagged it with up to 97% certainty as being AI-generated, while others found only a 20-30% chance. Fenix has defended himself, attributing any discrepancies to vocal processing and AutoTune. However, his live performances have raised more questions than answers, revealing awkward lip-syncing and low-quality vocals.

The lyrics are particularly telling, filled with logical near-gibberish rhymes that prioritize the rhyme scheme over actual meaning or narrative development. The delivery is odd, with syncopated lines forcing unnatural emphasis on certain syllables. While some argue Fenix could be using sophisticated tools to enhance his performance, the overall quality of Rubberz suggests a more basic model was used.
