AI’s New Script: Rewriting Hollywood

Hollywood’s embrace of AI is a mixed bag, with creators divided on its use.

If you want a clear understanding of how artificial intelligence (AI) is affecting the film industry… good luck. Some in Hollywood are loathing it, while others see potential in using it as a creative partner or cost-cutting tool. Ben Affleck’s $587 million AI startup sale to Netflix has sparked debates over copyright and IP.

Matthew Belloni, from Puck and a former lawyer, explains that everyone is using AI, albeit in different ways. Screenwriters might use generative models for suggestions, while studios are producing AI-generated content with varying success. The Writers Guild is more open to the technology as long as credited writers are involved.

On the administrative side, corporate AI like streamlining processes and better search results is widely adopted. However, creative AI remains a contentious issue, particularly when it comes to historical accuracy and originality. Elon Musk’s ambitious plans for an AI-generated version of The Odyssey raise ethical questions about authenticity in entertainment.

The stigma around using AI is still present but diminishing. Amazon faced backlash after announcing an AI-driven media day, highlighting the impact of public shaming on creators. As Hollywood navigates this new terrain, the balance between innovation and artistic integrity remains to be seen.
