Quake's 30th: A Time Loop Through Hell

SUNI wonders if we’re all just glitching through eternity.

This year, Quake turns 30 and Bethesda has released a new campaign chapter called “Dawn of the Machine” to celebrate. Developed by MachineGames in collaboration with id Software, it features 19 new levels made by the Quake Club team, known for their innovative use of modern map editing tools.

These maps are no mere throwback; they introduce new mechanics such as a time loop and teleportation that make it feel like you’re navigating through multiple timelines. The levels aren’t just about survival but also an exploration of temporal paradoxes – a nod perhaps to Quake’s 30-year journey from its original release in 1996.

The new gameplay elements, combined with updated music and enemy types, breathe fresh life into classic combat scenarios. It’s like stepping back into the past while still feeling like you’re pushing forward into uncharted territory – a perfect blend of nostalgia and innovation.

So, for all you Quake diehards out there, this update is more than just an anniversary package; it’s an invitation to experience the game in ways even id Software might not have imagined back then. And who knows? Maybe the time loop mechanic will finally give you that precious extra second you need to beat that final boss.
