Matt Groening, creator of The Simpsons, has dropped a tantalizing hint that the cult classic video game Simpsons: Hit & Run might be making a comeback. At D23, when questioned about a potential sequel, Groening replied, 'I think the original game is coming back in some form,' before current showrunner Matt Selman added, 'or not.' The tone and body language of both men suggested that Groening may have slipped up.

The original title first hit shelves way back in 2003 for PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube, and Windows. While it’s possible to get the game running on modern systems, it isn’t available on current-gen consoles. It’s not part of the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog or the Xbox backward compatibility list. A simple port might be enough to bring it back, but given its iconic status, a full HD remaster would be more fitting. The original cast did an absolutely brilliant job with their voice acting, so they wouldn’t even need to re-record.

While this news is exciting for fans, it’s also a reminder of just how long the game has been waiting in the wings. A new release could bring back childhood memories and nostalgia for many, but what form will it take? A direct port or an HD remaster that takes full advantage of modern technology?
