US Backs OpenAI in Copyright Battle

It’s a case of “read, digest, innovate” – or is it copyright theft?

In a legal spat over AI training, the US government has backed OpenAI, arguing that copyright laws shouldn’t stifle tech advancement. The 20-page brief, filed in a lawsuit by The New York Times, contends that AI development is key to America's global tech dominance.

The crux of the debate revolves around fair use, with AI companies arguing that their models transform copyrighted material into something new. Critics counter that this is just a guise for mass copyright infringement.

Previous court cases, like the $1.5 billion settlement against Anthropic, have leaned in favour of AI companies, with judges emphasising the transformative nature of AI training. However, the legal landscape remains murky, leaving many questions unanswered.

For now, the case continues in the Southern District of New York, with the Trump administration's brief adding another layer of complexity to the AI copyright conundrum.
