Europe's Tiny Tech Hopes

As China dominates, Europe bets on nanotech to power its future.

Europe’s battery industry is looking to nanotechnology to stay in the race, with startups like LeydenJar and Powall pushing the boundaries of what’s possible at almost unimaginable scales.

LeydenJar’s innovative anode, made using plasma deposition, promises a significant boost in battery efficiency, despite a decade-long development journey.

Christian Rood, CEO of LeydenJar, highlights the unique advantages of the Netherlands’ tech ecosystem, arguing that the cross-pollination of semiconductor and battery tech is key to Europe’s competitive edge.

Meanwhile, Powall is developing nanocoating techniques for battery powders, aiming to extend the life and performance of batteries. This precise and adaptable process could be the secret sauce for new, more durable materials.

Alexander Brown of the Mercator Institute for China Studies warns that while Europe can compete, China’s commitment to developing local alternatives, including niche technologies, means Europe must remain vigilant.
