This move marks the latest chapter in the ongoing transatlantic dispute over EU tech rules, which are seen as an infringement on American companies' sovereignty and free speech principles. According to the US Department of Justice, the European Commission has overstepped its boundaries by attempting to regulate American companies not operating within the EU. Assistant Attorney General Brett Shumate declared, 'The European Commission cannot engage in regulatory overreach to control American engines of innovation.' In December 2022, the EU fined X for breaking the Digital Services Act, accusing the platform of breaching transparency and data access rules. This case has become a contentious issue, with the European Commission's DSA rules becoming a focal point of conflict between Brussels and US tech companies. Previous administrations, including that of Donald Trump, have consistently sided with US tech firms, claiming EU regulations unfairly target American companies.
