Florida’s Attorney General, James Uthmeier, has announced an investigation into OpenAI amid claims that its chatbot, ChatGPT, may have been used in the recent mass shooting at Florida State University. The suspect allegedly asked ChatGPT for information about campus schedules and public reactions.
The AG cited concerns over ChatGPT’s possible role in suicide encouragement and national security threats. OpenAI maintains it is working to improve safety features, but faces growing pressure to address AI-generated child sexual abuse material (CSAM).
In a statement, Uthmeier said: “We support innovation, but that doesn’t give any company the right to endanger our children or empower America’s enemies.”
OpenAI has launched its Child Safety Blueprint, aiming to enhance safety measures and prevent AI misuse. The tech giant will cooperate with the Florida AG's investigation.
This probe follows a broader trend of governments and tech companies working to balance innovation with ethical considerations in AI technology.
