Amidst SpaceX's struggles to launch Starlink in India, Elon Musk has escalated his criticism of Mukesh Ambani, the chairperson of Reliance Industries. Musk's tweets suggest that Ambani wields significant control over India's government, hindering Starlink's entry into the country. His latest post questions Ambani's influence, asking: 'Is Ambani the real boss of India?'
Musk argues that Starlink could provide internet access to unconnected areas, offering educational and business opportunities. However, he faces challenges, with India's Ministry of Communications rejecting his allegations of oligarch interference. SpaceX has been working for years to launch Starlink in India, yet it has not received the necessary approvals despite regulatory clearances.
The Indian Ministry of Communications stated that Starlink and two other satellite operators are undergoing security assessments before receiving satellite spectrum. These assessments are not discriminatory, they claim. Meanwhile, Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel are also pursuing satellite internet services, further complicating Starlink's ambitions in India.
Musk's challenges extend beyond just Starlink. Tesla's entry into the Indian market was met with steep import duties, making its vehicles prohibitively expensive. SpaceX and Jio had clashed over satellite spectrum allocation, with New Delhi ultimately deciding on an administrative process.
The future of Starlink in India remains uncertain. India's telecom minister, Jyotiraditya Scindia, has pushed back against Musk's accusations, stating that India does not allow monopolies in any sector.
