With weeks until the midterms, the far-right election groups are setting their sights on nursing homes. Led by the Election Integrity Network, they claim without evidence that left-wing organizations are committing voter fraud, and are now recruiting followers to question local facilities.
The network has shared images and toolkits urging supporters to contact nursing homes, while highlighting so-called 'vulnerable residents' in competitive congressional districts. Critics argue this tactic could disenfranchise nursing home residents, who need assistance to vote.
Adding fuel to the fire, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services recently issued a memo that removes guidance on how staff can assist residents with voting, instead threatening prosecution for 'inappropriate coercion.' This move has been slammed by senators, who warned it would disenfranchise nursing home residents.
The Election Integrity Network’s founder, Cleta Mitchell, has been quoted as saying, 'These left-wing groups go into the nursing homes and steal the votes of these most vulnerable.' However, evidence of such widespread fraud remains elusive.
Despite the lack of concrete evidence, these groups continue to push their narrative, potentially putting at risk the voting rights of those who need support the most.
