A mysterious political action committee, the Invest in Tomorrow Coalition, is using unorthodox tactics to promote solar energy in the run-up to the US election. Funded by crypto billionaire Chris Larsen, the group is running ads against candidates associated with climate scepticism, including GOP Representative Lauren Boebert and Texas Congressman Chip Roy. The group, which has spent over $20 million, argues that it's time for the solar industry to get tough.
While green groups have traditionally relied on scientific consensus to make their case, the PAC is taking a different approach, focusing on specific political transgressions and MAGA-related controversies. The strategy seems to be paying off, with some candidates losing their primary races.
However, not all in the renewable energy field are pleased. Some see the aggressive tactics as alienating potential allies and decision-makers. Yet, the politics of energy, especially solar, are changing, with some high-profile MAGA figures now speaking up for renewables.
The tactics of the PAC mirror those of other special-interest groups, but the question remains: is the stick big enough to change the game? As one expert puts it, 20 million dollars might seem like a drop in the bucket compared to the carbon industry's annual spending.
