A Russian man, named Vladimir K, has been arrested in Japan for his alleged involvement in a cyber-attack that disrupted London hospitals and contributed to a patient's death.
The hack, carried out by the Qilin cyber-crime gang, targeted the blood testing company Synnovis in 2024, leading to a year-long investigation that finally led to his arrest. The attack caused significant disruption, including the cancellation of operations and the diversion of emergency patients.
According to German officials, the suspect is one of the core members of the Qilin gang, which has targeted over 4,000 organisations since 2024, extorting more than $140 million from victims. His extradition was first reported in October, with the German police including the Synnovis hack in their investigation.
While the attack is unprecedented in linking a cyber-incident directly to a death, experts remain cautious about attributing such tragic events solely to technology. The patient at King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, who died unexpectedly, faced a long wait for a blood test result, among other contributing factors.
The Qilin gang, operating since 2022, has also targeted schools, hospitals, and companies, including the Japanese beer maker Asahi in October 2025. Despite the rarity of such arrests in Russia, the gang's claims of hacking to protest the UK's stance in the Russian war on Ukraine remain unverified.
