If you're going to bring Faces of Death into the modern era, Daniel Goldhaber says, you have to contend with the fact that real snuff is everywhere. His rebooted Faces of Death stars Barbie Ferreira as a content moderator for a TikTok-like app who discovers videos of real killings inspired by the original movie's scenes.
The film explores how social media platforms, with their infinite scroll and algorithmic push, are shaping our minds and politics. Goldhaber was inspired by his experience moderating content that included snuff guys and child porn, while co-writer Isa Mazzei reflects on escalating violent imagery from 9/11 to Rotten.com.
Their new film is a horror thriller set in the realm of social media addiction and its political consequences. The duo sees the proliferation of snuff content as an opportunity to explore how it affects society, curating real images of death from news and social media feeds for the film's social media scrolls.
Mazzei notes that exposure to this content has led her to a new baseline of anxiety and alienation. The film follows Margot, a moderator who attempts to expose the killer behind the chilling videos, but ultimately succumbs to the infinite regress of social media.
Goldhaber describes Arthur as a classic black-pilled troll exploiting the broken system for attention. Margot's journey is one of disillusionment with the system and the realization that her job was merely a smoke screen.
