Rivian's factory in Normal, Illinois was hit by a tornado over the weekend, sustaining damage and pausing operations. The company made it clear that no one was injured, but it’s still assessing the extent of the damage in Building 2, where the R2 SUV is manufactured.
The EF-1 intensity tornado hit this newer part of the factory, primarily used for R2 logistics such as parts deliveries. CEO RJ Scaringe praised his team's response, thanking staff for following emergency protocols and supporting cleanup efforts. Pictures show a large section of the roof has collapsed inside the facility.
Despite the setback, Rivian expects operations to resume this week in Building 2. The R2 is crucial for the company’s financial turnaround; it aims to sell between 20,000 and 25,000 units by year-end, making it one of the fastest launches of a new EV in U.S. history.
Rivian is also preparing an entirely new factory outside Atlanta, Georgia, which will start vertical construction this year. This facility will produce both R2 and the upcoming R3 hatchback. Production is expected to begin in 2028, but for now, Rivian must navigate this unexpected twist in its timeline.
