Today saw the opening testimony of Elon Musk in his lawsuit against Sam Altman. The tech mogul appeared more petty and unprepared than focused and charismatic.
Musk's narrative was dominated by self-aggrandizement, highlighting his role in various ventures without much relevance to OpenAI. His claim that he could have started the company for profit but chose not to came across as petulant rather than persuasive. The courtroom response to his story was notably lukewarm.
Musk's account of his involvement with OpenAI and his mission to prevent Google from dominating AI research lacked clarity, especially regarding key figures like Shivon Zilis. His definition of artificial general intelligence seemed to be more for show than substance, given the current state of technology.
The trial’s central question remains: did OpenAI betray its mission statement by going down a for-profit path? Musk's strategy in defending his initial vision seems muddled, making it difficult to distinguish between his original intentions and those that eventually materialized. His performance today suggests he might be more interested in the show than the substance.
While this is not the first time Musk has appeared in court, his current demeanor contrasts sharply with his previous charm on display during a different defamation suit. Whether this trial will see another change of heart or remain a drawn-out affair remains to be seen.
