Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has announced a revised deal with OpenAI that retains access to the company’s intellectual property but removes the financial burden of paying for it. Mr Nadella was confident about this partnership, stating it was good for everyone and expressing his focus on ensuring win-win scenarios in all agreements. The new arrangement will grant Microsoft royalty-free access to OpenAI's most advanced AI models through 2032.
Despite speculation that the deal could harm Microsoft’s competitive edge, Nadella noted that the software giant has other sources of revenue from its relationship with OpenAI, including cloud service purchases and equity holdings. Moreover, he highlighted that enterprises often use multiple AI models, suggesting less reliance on any single provider.
Moving forward, Nadella believes that Microsoft offers the broadest selection of models among hyperscalers, allowing customers to choose the right model for their needs. The CEO also mentioned that over 10,000 customers have already used more than one AI model from different sources.
Microsoft’s earnings report showed an AI business revenue run rate of $37 billion, up by a staggering 123% year-over-year. This strong financial performance suggests that the new deal could be beneficial for both parties involved in the partnership.
Overall, Nadella remains optimistic about Microsoft's future in the AI arena and believes that this revised agreement will continue to drive cloud growth and profits for the company.
