George Orwell’s “Animal Farm” is a timeless critique of power and ideology. Yet, for some MAGA influencers, the message appears lost in translation.
The animated adaptation directed by Andy Serkis has sparked outrage, with conservative commentators like Emily Saves America and Riley Gaines posting that it endorses Marxism. Their confusion highlights a broader issue: interpreting ambiguity without clear messaging is challenging, even for those tasked with promoting political values.
Animal Farm’s actual message—about the dangers of power regardless of its source—is more nuanced than either capitalism or communism. The pigs’ adoption of human traits and the farm owner’s capitalist methods illustrate that the lust for power corrupts all ideologies. Yet, this complexity seems lost on those who prefer simplistic narratives.
Despite criticism, the film’s success in promoting themes like authoritarianism and corruption may still resonate with its intended audience. However, the inability to agree on its message suggests a broader failing of media literacy and critical thinking among political commentators.
