Coatue, a major player in venture capital and hedge funds, has unveiled a new strategy to boost its returns on artificial intelligence investments. The firm is launching Next Frontier, aiming to acquire land near power sources for the construction of data centers. This initiative could see Coatue partner with Fluidstack, which recently clinched a $50 billion deal to build data centers specifically for Anthropic.
The U.S. currently hosts over 3,000 data centers, but more than 1,500 new ones are in the pipeline, mostly in rural areas. This boom has attracted interest from various stakeholders, including Blackstone and Shark Tank’s Kevin O’Leary.
While land values may rise due to this increased demand, the question remains: Is it worth trading crops for computing clouds? Perhaps soon, servers will outnumber soybeans on American farmlands.
