The Trump administration has imposed a nationwide pause on approving new US wind farms citing national security concerns. Approximately 165 projects on private land are now in limbo as the Department of Defense reviews them for potential radar interference.
Typically, this approval process is swift and involves a small fee from developers to update military radar systems. However, since August 2025, developers have faced unexpected delays and cancellations of meetings with DoD officials, leaving many projects in turmoil.
Among the affected are 35 projects that had nearly completed negotiations but now await final sign-offs. Another 80 projects are either mid-negotiation or previously considered low-risk. The indefinite hold-up has sparked concerns among industry experts about the long-term impact on renewable energy development in America.
This move by the DoD signals a significant shift in the administration's stance towards green energy, potentially setting back the country’s ambitious climate goals. Whether this is a temporary measure or part of a larger strategy remains to be seen.
