At a Make America Healthy Again Institute event, anti-vaccine Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
announced new federal initiatives to curb the prescribing of antidepressants, despite mental health experts condemning his rhetoric and pushing back on such efforts.
The MAHA event focused on 'overmedicalization,' with participants suggesting that too many Americans are overprescribed SSRIs like Zoloft and Prozac without informed consent or evidence. His claims echo dangerous, unfounded assertions that antidepressants make people violent and contribute to mass shootings, particularly targeting black children.
The notion of quitting antidepressants being as difficult as quitting heroin has been debunked by experts, who point out there is no research supporting this claim. Kennedy’s statements are not only harmful but also ignore the significant benefits SSRIs provide for treating depression, anxiety, and PTSD.
