Ethos revolts against clunky expert networks

AI-powered voice onboarding promises a more nuanced understanding of expertise, but is it enough to shake up the marketplace?

When seeking expert advice for projects, companies often hit roadblocks with traditional platforms like LinkedIn or GLG. Ethos, backed by a16z’s $22.75 million Series A funding round, aims to disrupt this landscape through voice-powered onboarding that captures deeper insights beyond conventional job titles.

Founded by James Lo and Daniel Mankowitz in 2024, Ethos uses AI to gather more comprehensive data about experts, enabling better matching of skills and capabilities. This approach could transform how companies source talent for complex projects, such as finding professionals who have experience with specific startups or drug development.

While traditional platforms rely on job titles, Ethos delves into sub-specializations through its voice interviews, offering a richer data set for both experts and clients. The company’s founders see the future merging human and agent economies, where algorithms play a crucial role in matching individuals with opportunities.

Ethos has seen significant growth, with around 35,000 new users joining weekly, driven by interest from top hedge funds, private equity firms, and foundational AI labs. However, the challenge remains in building an expert base that aligns well with client needs, particularly as AI research institutions map out human talent.

With a lean team of eight people and ambitious growth plans, Ethos aims to scale without diluting its focus on quality over quantity. The potential for revolutionizing how expertise is accessed and utilized in the professional world hangs in the balance.
