A data center in Georgia apparently guzzled through nearly 30 million gallons of water without paying for it. The oversight highlights the risks posed by rapid development of data centers, especially when local water systems are not prepared to monitor usage.
The facility had two industrial water hookups that were neither monitored nor billed, raising concerns about potential regulatory loopholes and a lack of oversight in infrastructure planning.
County officials acknowledged their own shortcomings, citing understaffing and the transition to new technology as excuses for the months-long unnoticed surge. This incident underscores the need for better coordination and more robust monitoring systems.
The case also brings into question whether larger companies are prioritizing water conservation and sustainability in their operations, especially when it comes to such large-scale usage.
