Raspberry Pi boss warns against AI hype

The AI boom could scare away tech talent, argues Eben Upton, and that’s no virtual joke.

The founder of Raspberry Pi has warned that overestimating the abilities of Artificial Intelligence (AI) could deter people from pursuing technical careers, potentially exacerbating a skills shortage.

Eben Upton, speaking to the BBC's Big Boss Interview podcast, highlighted concerns that AI tools are being hyped as replacements for human work, which he believes could undo decades of efforts in encouraging young people into tech roles.

Upton also pointed out that it is currently impossible to make informed decisions about career paths given the rapidly evolving landscape of technology. He suggested waiting at least five years before making such predictions.

The issue extends beyond just the UK, with high energy costs posing a challenge for engineering firms, although Upton remains optimistic about the economic growth potential of tech companies like Raspberry Pi despite these hurdles.
