After two hours of deliberation, the jury has found against Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk in his legal battle with OpenAI co-founder Sam Altman. The case, Musk v. Altman, saw all claims dismissed due to statute of limitations issues.
The advisory jury, while not legally binding, underscored that even tech titans must navigate the complexities of courtroom procedures. US District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers will have the final say on any appeal Musk plans to file; however, for now, he has acknowledged a technicality ruling rather than a substantive verdict.
Musk's claims were centered around allegations of breach of charitable trust and unjust enrichment by OpenAI’s leadership, with Microsoft also accused of aiding in these breaches. Despite his loss, Musk remains confident that Altman and Brockman profited illicitly, believing the timing of their actions to be the only contentious issue.
Microsoft's spokesperson Alex Haurek defended the company's involvement, stating their commitment to advancing AI for global use. As the legal dust settles, this case continues to highlight the challenges in enforcing ethical standards within tech giants and the importance of clear corporate governance.
