Spies from China's intelligence services are now using job search websites like LinkedIn to lure Western workers into sharing sensitive information, according to a joint advisory by the FBI, MI5 and other governments. The Chinese spies pose as recruiters for fake companies, targeting people with access to non-public information.
The advisory highlights that unclassified information can still be valuable if combined with more sensitive data, aiding Beijing's policy decisions. While China’s military intelligence seeks strategic advantages in the Indo-Pacific region, the targets are not limited to just security clearance holders and military personnel. Journalists, academics and think-tank employees also fall into their sights.
These tactics are part of a broader effort by Chinese spies who often rely on hacking but now aim to cultivate sources through public websites and communities. The advisory serves as a reminder for users to be vigilant when sharing information online, especially those with access to sensitive data.
A LinkedIn spokesperson confirmed that creating fake accounts or misrepresenting identities is against their terms of service, stating they will continue to enforce policies against such abuse.
