Apple’s recent WWDC keynote spent a considerable amount of time on parental controls, but the updates were largely underwhelming. Redesigned interfaces and minor upgrades are not enough when it comes to managing children's screen time.
The core issue: Screen Time is far from reliable. It fails to block unauthorized access or effectively manage apps like Discord and TikTok, which kids can easily bypass by visiting related websites.
Apple’s attempts at offering ‘expert’ guidance on app usage are more likely to cause parental guilt than to enforce effective limits. A separate app for Screen Time would make it easier to lock down and monitor, but even that is not enough if teens can still find ways around the restrictions.
The redesign may offer some improvements in usability, but the fundamental problem remains: Apple’s parental controls are a half-hearted attempt at addressing an urgent need. With so many user complaints about inaccuracies and workarounds, it's clear that more substantial changes are required.
