Farage has called on X to address a series of fake, AI-generated adverts showing him in heated exchanges with Bank of England governor Andrew Bailey. These ads have been repeatedly shown to UK users, prompting both Reform and the Bank to urge action.
Farage stated that Reform UK contacted X 'to the highest level' on Monday, hoping for swift removal of the ads. The BBC has approached X for comment, while Governor Bailey highlighted the rise of such scams, urging vigilance and reporting suspicious content.
The ads, which depict Farage and Bailey in various confrontational scenarios, are particularly troubling due to their realistic appearance and the use of blue ticks indicating premium subscriptions. Many posts also feature false 'play' buttons, directing users to AI cryptocurrency trading schemes.
Both entities have stressed that they do not endorse or advertise any products, advising against clicking on suspicious links. The Bank of England has reiterated its stance by stating that senior representatives do not endorse investments or financial products online.
The incident raises questions about the reliability of online content and the potential for AI to be manipulated for malicious purposes.
