Meta’s top exec Andrew Bosworth admitted his company’s new artificial intelligence division was a “disaster.” The tech giant is now promising better communication, career growth and, of course, more snacks to ease the pain.
The AI team has faced widespread dissatisfaction, with one worker describing it as a “gulag.” Bosworth cited recent feedback as driving his changes, acknowledging that they had undermined trust in employees’ expertise and future prospects. He promised more personalized attention from managers, limiting managerial churn, and offering “AI coaching” tools.
In an attempt to salvage the situation, Meta’s CTO also vowed to improve the work environment with better microkitchens and social events budgets. However, Bosworth warned that there would be tough trade-offs around compute resources as they adapt to a more dynamic AI landscape.
The reshuffle came amid broader concerns at Meta, including mass layoffs and worker surveillance. CEO Mark Zuckerberg has also acknowledged the issues and vowed changes. The Applied AI team is now focusing on developing coding and agentic capabilities for Meta’s frontier models, potentially expanding into security, debugging, and product development.
