Car giant Jaguar Land Rover (JPL) was hit by a $2.5 billion cyber-attack, with The New York Times reporting that Russian hackers were behind the breach.
The hack halted production for months and cost the British economy an estimated $2.5 billion, leading to a £1.5 billion bailout from the U.K. government.
Multiple agencies including Microsoft, FBI, Britain’s National Crime Agency, National Cyber Security Centre, Google’s Mandiant unit, and Palo Alto Networks were involved in the investigation, highlighting the complexity of international cybercrime.
A Jordanian hacker named Rey was also found to have breached some JPL networks, adding a layer of intrigue to an already complex case.
As we drive forward in the digital age, these incidents remind us that our vehicles and economies are increasingly vulnerable to unseen threats, even when they come from unexpected quarters.
