Tidal has announced new policies regarding music created entirely by artificial intelligence. Starting on July 15th, the platform will label such tracks with an icon, making it clear they are 100 percent AI-generated. However, these tracks will no longer be monetizable.
The company’s priority is ensuring that royalties go to original works directly produced, written, and performed by people. Tidal will therefore not pay royalties for music identified as wholly AI-generated. While the platform isn't outright banning this content, it's taking steps to distinguish it from human-created music.
Tidal hasn't disclosed which tools it uses to identify AI-generated tracks, but plans to improve its detection methods over time. It also hopes that other content distributors will properly label their AI-made content. Tidal intends to remove or block such music associated with fraudulent activity as of mid-July.
Other streaming services like Spotify and Deezer have implemented similar measures. Spotify recently launched a verification program, where artists confirmed as real people are eligible for a green checkmark on their profiles, while those primarily uploading AI-generated content aren't.
This move by Tidal reflects the growing impact of AI in the music industry. As technology evolves, platforms must adapt to maintain ethical standards and protect creators' rights.
