Sony has announced that UK PlayStation users will no longer be able to stream 551 titles from StudioCanal starting September 1st. This move highlights the legal complexities and fickle nature of digital content ownership.
Previous incidents, such as Sony’s decision to remove Discovery shows from customer libraries, suggest that even with a deal, there are no guarantees. In 2022, over 300 StudioCanal titles were removed in Germany and Austria, while more recently, Funimation digital libraries were deleted after the service was merged with Crunchyroll.
The incident serves as a stark reminder that when you buy content digitally, it’s not truly yours. Long-term licenses can be rescinded at any time, leaving consumers without recourse or compensation. This shift in Sony’s policies has frustrated many users, some of whom believe the company should offer refunds for affected purchases.
Despite these frustrations, the legal notice is a clear statement from an entertainment giant that it retains full control over its content distribution. While digital rental and purchase models might seem permanent to consumers, they are subject to change based on agreements with content creators.
