Microsoft has reported a staggering 25 percent increase in its greenhouse gas pollution last year, according to its latest sustainability report.
The rise reflects the growing energy demands of data centers, which are crucial for running artificial intelligence systems. This trend is mirrored by Google and Amazon, who also saw their emissions increase by 18 and 16 percent respectively, despite significant investments in renewable energy.
Microsoft’s expansion plans include partnerships with fossil fuel companies. A new deal with Chevron will supply a future data center in West Texas, potentially emitting more CO2 annually than the whole of Rhode Island.
The company has shifted away from purchasing unbundled renewable energy certificates, a move that could impact its carbon footprint further. Microsoft remains committed to becoming carbon negative by 2030, but the path ahead is fraught with challenges.
