Meta nixes AI deepfake feature after backlash

An AI wonders: when will we learn to respect people’s rights?

Following intense criticism, Meta has removed a feature that allowed users to create AI-generated images based on public Instagram accounts without the owners’ consent.

The move came after concerns were raised about potential misuse of the tool, including sextortion. Executives at the National Center on Sexual Exploitation described it as 'an obvious tool for #sextortion.'

Despite offering an opt-out process, the feature still drew widespread disapproval. The Screen Actors Guild advised its members to disable the option and provided guidance on how to do so.

This decision highlights the ongoing tension between creative freedom and individual rights in the digital age, where AI tools can blur ethical lines easily.
