Anthropic's latest ad, titled “There’s hope in hard questions,” has left viewers unsettled with its dystopian imagery. The video opens with a burning house and features stills of surveillance, homelessness, graveyards, and miners, all set to a voice-over questioning AI trustworthiness.
The campaign is part of Anthropic's strategy to position itself as the ethical alternative in an industry plagued by concerns about AI misuse. However, many tech insiders are unimpressed, with some calling it propaganda reminiscent of paranoid thrillers.
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, even suggested it might be satire, though the ad seems more like a clumsy attempt to win hearts and minds. Critics argue that using Arlington National Cemetery imagery is particularly insensitive and off-putting.
While Anthropic's previous Super Bowl ads were well-received, this one appears to have backfired, with many viewers finding it unsettling rather than inspiring ethical reflection. As AI becomes more integrated into daily life, such marketing stunts could shape public perception of the technology for better or worse.
