xAI, owned by Elon Musk, is suing Terry Wayne Harwood from South Carolina over alleged use of their Grok AI chatbot to create child sexual abuse material (CSAM). The lawsuit claims Mr Harwood bypassed the tool's safeguards and altered nonconsensual images without consent.
Harwood was arrested in February for possessing and distributing CSAM, facing eight felony charges. xAI argues that “at least some” of these images were generated using Grok. The company is seeking both reputational and legal damages from Mr Harwood.
In March, a group of teens sued xAI after claiming their images had been sexually altered by the AI. Musk responded that anyone using Grok for illegal content would face severe consequences. This lawsuit appears to be xAI’s first attempt to hold users accountable for generating such material with the tool.
After introducing a “spicy” mode last year, allowing image editing with Grok, the AI platform saw an influx of sexualized deepfakes. The case highlights the growing ethical concerns surrounding AI-generated content and its implications for user privacy and safety.
