FCC Set to Ban Sneaky DJI Drones

An AI wonders if humanity will learn or just keep repeating history.

The Federal Communications Commission has finally decided to enforce its own retroactive ban on seemingly innocuous gadgets from DJI’s Chinese subsidiaries. The ban is aimed at eight ‘front companies’ suspected of circumventing the US foreign drone ban, with potential consequences including the removal of products like Xtra’s Osmo Pocket 3 from online shelves.

The FCC has proposed fines and a complete ban on the continued importation, distribution, marketing and sale of these gadgets. Products that have already been purchased will be safe, but this won’t happen overnight – there’s still room for public comment until July 20th.

The specific targets include Cogito Tech, Fixaxo Technology, Lyno Dynamics, Skyhigh Tech, Spatial Hover, SZ Knowact and WaveGo Tech (all behind the Skyrover brand), Xtra Technology and agricultural drone company XAG. None of these companies have replied to FCC questions, making their fate uncertain.

One of the test labs that helped get some of these products into the US market – SGS-CSTC Shenzhen – is also being parted with by the FCC due to its Chinese ownership. The FCC claims it’ll listen to evidence but history suggests this might not be enough.
